FAQ

What to bring: 

Visitors are kindly advised to quality walking boots with good grip, a warm jacket, spare socks, a light rain coat, 

sun cream, sleeping bag and a water bottle.

Mosquitoes:
 

Mosquitoes are rare due to altitude and temperature, but bring repellent. 

 

Food:

 

Dietry requirements should be made known at least 7 days in advance. 

 

Routes:

 

Mulanje has 6 entry points. Trek Mulanje is based in Likhibula at an altitude of 800m.

ROUTE A 

 

LIKHUBULA FOREST OFFICE TO CHAMBE & FRANCIS HUTS

The routes starts from Likhubula forestry via Chapaluka path takes about 4 hours depending on your pace. The route goes through waterfalls and streams. The path is not passable during rain season and crossing streams could be a challenge. The other route to Chambe and Francis goes via Sky line path, quick but straight up and it takes about 3hours.

 

ROUTE B LIKHUBULA TO LICHENYA & CCAP HUTS

 

The route is very gentle and it normally takes 6 hours walking up and down. CCAP Hut is one of the oldest huts in the plateau and its more than 120 years old and it has beds, matresses, cooking facilities.

 

ROUTE C: LICHENYA TO CHISEPO

 

From Lichenya plateau, the path leads to Chisepo hut and is a 4 hour walk. Chisepo hut is the base of Sapitwa (the highest point) and we recommend our clients who want to do sapitwa to start from Chisepo.

 

ROUTE D: CHISEPO, THUCHILA, MINUNU:

 

From Chisepo hut hut the other altenatives for places to visit are Thuchila hut, Minunu hut as well as Chinzama and this is the middle of Mulanje mountain.

 

ROUTE E: CHINZAMA TO SOMBANI HUT

 

A walk from Chinzama hut is very gentle with nice views, and this section you may see all different kinds of animals including, baboons, monkeys, bush bucks, hynas, wild goats, birds and possibly leopards. However it is a 3.5 hour walk and Sombani is the smallest hut on the plateau it only accomodates 8 people. From Sombani the path leads down to fortlister and phalombe plain area.

 

The other route is from Sombani hut to Madzeka and this a 7 hours walk with very beautiful views all over and nice natural swimming pools. However, from Madzeka hut, the path leads down to the bottom walking in the tea plantations and pine apples plantations.

 

Accomodation:

 

Mulanje area has good lodges and a rest-house. Trek Mulanje can make reservations on your behalf with payment settled directly by clients.

Getting to Mulanje from Blantyre:

 

From Blantyre drive or take a mini bus to Mulanje via Robert Mugabe highway. From Mulanje town take an earth road at th Pizza shop to Likhubula (10km) s and when you arrive in Likhubula ask for David Majeweta.
